Icom 756 Pro III First let me say the IC 756 Pro III is exactly what I personally wanted. It may not be for everyone. I like all the knobs and dials on a full size rig. I wanted a rig with a pan adapter display.

I always admired but could not afford the IC 781. So far I like everything about the rig. My previous rig was an IC 761. I'm familiar with the Icom layout so I'm at home with the 756 Pro III. The menu's are intuitive and well thought out.
I've only had to refer to the manual a few times. The only short coming I see with this rig is if you are a serious contester the receiver does not have good dynamic range with close proximity strong signals. Inrad makes a roofing filter mod that improves this but installation an the price of the filter will set you back about $300. I personally am not a big contester and this has not been a big issue for me. The receiver is plenty sensitive. I feel I got a good value at $1400.00 and easily would have had to pay double that price for a new rig on par with the 756 Pro III.
I give the 756 Pro III 5 stars. Verified purchase: Yes Condition: Pre-owned.
Good older radio I bought it knowing there was a receive problem and that it had lines in the display. The receive problem was a simple fix that is well documented on the internet under Icom IC-756 ESD problem. The fix was easy and the parts where cheap from Icom. They are very small so order 2 or 3 just in case you loose one. There are only 5 lines on this display that you don't even notice after a few minutes.
As for the radio, it functions very well for a 15 year old design. Receive is good, although slightly noisier than some other radios. Transmit quality on ssb is very good with good signal reports.
The built in tuner is fast once it learns your favorite frequencies. The DSP is the first generation and needs to be played with to figure out how to get the most from it and how not to use it. I am ver y happy with the radio and plan to use it for 3 or 4 years before I buy a newer radio and then will probably keep it for a travel / field radio. Verified purchase: Yes.
'early' IC756 review after decade+ of ownership Got mine new/just after release. No problems at all in all that time, ever! I can't think of a better rig/especially the receiver. You just can't go wrong here. GREAT receiver even in close to loud stations, & even near broadcast towers (6 radio/tv stations within a mile of me= several over 100KW!) No 'de-sensing' issues seen. Been thinking on getting something newer w/waterfall display; but this thing is so good, it's hard to part w/it.
Especially as you can't get much for the early ones. Recv about equal w/my old Ten Tec Omni 6 dsp; maybe TT slightly better w/all the filter slots loaded on CW. I have not seen the dreaded 'screen' issue, so not familar w/it. Good luck; what a great price for a great rig. DW, San Lorenzo, CA Verified purchase: No.
